Breaking Barriers Building Dreams

In Kayunga District, FID’s "Breaking Barriers to Girls' Education" project empowered 17-year-old Sarah to overcome poverty and cultural barriers, transforming her future through education.
In Kayunga, 17-year-old Sarah faced poverty and cultural norms that threatened her education. FID’s initiative changed her trajectory by providing school supplies, sanitary facilities, and safe spaces. Sarah, once resigned to early marriage, now thrives as a confident student with dreams of becoming a teacher.
FID’s holistic approach—combining community engagement, infrastructure improvements, and empowerment programs—ensures girls like Sarah can break free from societal constraints and pursue their potential.
FID engaged communities through meetings and media campaigns to shift attitudes toward girls’ education. They provided books, uniforms, and sanitary pads, and renovated girls’ latrines to create safe school environments. Girls’ clubs and mentorship programs helped Sarah build confidence and learn her rights, while workshops addressed gender-based violence.
FID’s comprehensive support included:
- Community outreach to promote girls’ education
- Provision of school supplies and sanitary pads
- Construction of girls’ latrines for privacy and dignity
- Girls’ clubs and mentorship for empowerment
- Vocational training and psychosocial support for at-risk girls
By addressing menstrual hygiene and partnering with health centers, FID empowered girls with knowledge about their bodies. Sarah’s story reflects the project’s impact, inspiring other girls in Kayunga to dream big and shaping a generation of change-makers.
