Health Promotion

Program Description
Our Health promotion program is dedicated to improving the health and wellbeing of communities. We work across rural and urban setting to increase access to affordable, quality health services, especially for women, youth and children. Our interventions focus on medical outreaches/camps, disease prevention, health education and empowering citizens to demand better services from duty bearers.
Our Objectives:
- To enhance access to affordable, high-quality healthcare services through targeted initiatives for underserved and vulnerable communities.
Activities:
- Conducting community health outreaches to provide medical services to underserved communities to improve access to essential healthcare services.
- Implementing nutrition support programs to enhance health outcomes, particularly for children and pregnant women.
- Raising awareness on preventive healthcare practices through campaigns and educational sessions.
- Conducting health awareness campaigns on disease prevention, reproductive health, and hygiene.
- Addressing Gender-Based Violence (GBV) through awareness programs and support services.
- Promoting improved Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) initiatives in vulnerable communities.
- Strengthening citizen engagement with health service providers to improve healthcare accessibility and quality.
Key Initiatives:
Community health outreaches: FID’s community outreach initiatives bring essential medical services directly to marginalized and hard-to-reach populations. These outreaches play a vital role in bridging the gap between health facilities and underserved communities. FID health outreaches focus on preventive care, early disease detection and supporting vulnerable groups like children, women and youth. By engaging community members and leaders, these outreaches improve access to health services, promote healthy behaviors and empower communities to take active roles in their wellbeing.
Nutrition support: A well-nourished population reduces strain on health systems and supports economic growth, yet globally, 2 billion people lack essential micronutrients and 155 million children suffer from stunted growth due to poor nutrition. FID believes that access to nutritious diets is key to improving health, education and livelihoods. Early-life malnutrition can cause irreversible harm, so improving nutrition during the critical 1,000-day window from pregnancy to a child’s second birthday is vital. Proper nutrition in this period enhances children’s physical and brain development, school performance, future earning potential and reduces chronic disease risk. To address this, FID promotes good nutrition practices focused on mothers and young children, provides essential micronutrients and administers deworming treatments.
Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH): FID believes that access to clean drinking water, sanitation and improved hygiene is a core requirement to supporting the sustainable development of a community. Without access to these basic resources people can spend significant time each day collecting water, whilst water-borne diseases will remain prevalent. This can significantly restrict an individual’s ability to gain an education or contribute towards household income-generation. This has a particularly damaging impact on women and girls because of their traditional household role in many cultures. FID believes that safe sanitation and good hygiene is of equal importance to access to a clean water source. FID Uganda is keen to support programs which take an integrated approach to addressing access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene.
Health education and awareness campaigns: FID Uganda actively implements health education and awareness campaigns to empower communities with knowledge about disease prevention, healthy lifestyles and available health services. These campaigns use culturally appropriate approaches to reach diverse audiences, focusing on key issues such as sexual and reproductive health, nutrition, hygiene and chronic disease prevention. By increasing awareness and understanding, FID helps individuals make informed health decisions and promotes community-wide participation in improving health outcomes. These efforts are crucial for building resilient communities that can sustain long-term health improvements.
Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights: FID believes that all individuals should have access to good sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) which enable women to minimize chances of having unwanted or mistimed pregnancies. This in turn supports girls and women to stay in school longer, pursue employment, and reduces the maternal and new-born mortality associated with adolescent or closely spaced pregnancies. Despite this, about 34% of people in many parts of Uganda especially adolescents and underserved groups, still lack adequate access to contraception due to factors like distance, cost and stock shortages. Additionally, many lack the support needed to make informed decisions about their SRH needs and contraception choices, as well as the confidence (self-efficacy) to act on these decisions. To address this, FID focuses on sustainable solutions that improve access to quality SRH services and foster ongoing, informed SRH discussions to build lasting self-efficacy as individuals' needs evolve over time.
FID Uganda is committed to building healthier communities by addressing the social, economic and systemic barriers to good health. Our work empowers citizens while promoting sustainable health practices for lasting impact.
Through these efforts, we aim to create healthier, more resilient communities across Uganda.
